Since the beginning of humankind there is evidence of dental disease and its treatment. In 500BC, Aristotle wrote about treating decayed teeth and using wires to stabilise fractured jaws. Through the Middle Ages, dental care was provided by barbers who established their own Guild. It has only been in the last 150 years that the regulation of dental practise has been established, through university dental school institutions and national regulatory bodies.
