Aged & Extended Care Services

Specialist geriatrics services provide for comprehensive geriatric assessment and management across the health care continuum spanning across hospitals and the community with a special focus on older people presenting with frailty and functional decline threatening their ability to live independently within the community.

Our specialist geriatric medicine service is primarily based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woodville but staff outreach to many other locations across Central Adelaide Local Health Network.

  • What is Geriatric Medicine?

Geriatric Medicine is concerned with the clinical, preventative, remedial and social aspects of illness associated with older age. In older age, frailty is common. Presentation of illness in those who are frailer may not be as straightforward with people experiencing falls, reduced mobility, deteriorating memory, emergency of dementia as well as side effects from medications. Too often, this gradual decline in health and wellbeing is classified as a normal aspect of ageing.

Many erroneously conclude that this decline is inevitable and nothing can be done. On the contrary, this is a myth. It is possible that with comprehensive geriatric assessment and management, the situation can be improved and the older person could enjoy a better quality of life.

Geriatricians work with other clinicians including nurses, allied health staff, pharmacist, psychologist, old age psychiatrists (psychogeriatricians) and other specialists to improve overall functioning helping older people remain independent longer.
