Track Record of Professor Wayne D. Tilley:
Professor Tilley returned to Australia in late 1990 after a NHMRC CJ Martin Fellowship at UT Southwestern in Dallas, Texas where he was one of the first to clone the human androgen receptor (AR). Since then, Prof Tilley’s laboratory has made a major contribution to understanding the molecular mechanisms of resistance to conventional hormonal (androgen ablation) therapies used in the treatment of prostate cancer. In particular, his laboratory has shown that continued signalling via the AR is an important determinant of disease progression and treatment response in metastatic prostate cancer. His laboratory has also pioneered research into understanding the regulation of breast cancer by androgens. A current major research focus is the development of new treatments for breast and prostate cancer based on AR signalling. In 1995, Prof Tilley co-published in PNAS with Prof Norman Greenberg (Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX) on the now widely used TRAMP mouse model of prostate cancer. Recently this collaboration resulted in development of an exciting new model of prostate cancer where prostate tumorigenesis occurs solely as a consequence of enforced expression of an AR variant in the mouse prostate (PNAS 102:1151-1156, 2005).
Prof Tilley has published more than 100 publications, and his research has been presented at various international meetings, including: American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Special Conferences, on Prostate Cancer (Palm Springs CA, 1994; Naples, Florida, 2001); Keystone Symposium, Breast and Prostate Cancer (Taos NM, 1996); International Congress of Endocrinology (San Francisco CA, 1996; Sydney 2000); CaPCURE Third Annual Scientific Retreat (Lake Tahoe NV, 1996); Third International Symposium on Hormonal Carcinogenesis (Seattle WA, 1998); Gordon Conferences on Hormonal Carcinogenesis (Tilton NH, 1999: Meriden NH, 2003); Keystone Symposium on Androgen Action (Keystone, CO 2004); The Prostate Cancer Charitable Trust Forum (New York, 2004), The Prostate Cancer Foundation Annual Scientific Retreat (Lake Tahor, NV, 2004), the Keystone Breast and Prostate Cancer Symposium (Monterey, CA, 2005); Gordon Research Conference, Hormone Action and Development in Cancer, (Colby Sawyer College, NH, July 2007); US Endrocrine Society 89th Annual Meeting (Toronto, Canada, 2007).
Prof Tilley is a member of the Board of Andrology Australia (NHMRC Centre of Excellence in Male Reproductive Health); the National Breast Cancer Foundation, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and the NSW Cancer Institute Research Advisory Committees; the University of Adelaide Faculty of Health Sciences Research Grants Committee and the Executive of the Hanson Institute. Prof. Tilley was a Director of the Australian Society for Medical Research (1984-1987; 1991-1993), being President in 1993. In 1997, in conjunction with Professor Villis Marshall, he established the Australian Prostate Cancer Collaboration Inc (APCC), and in the same year was appointed Director of the Flinders Cancer Centre. Prof Tilley undertook a sabbatical in the Department of Preventive Medicine, the Norris Cancer Center, University of Southern California from October 2001 – May 2002. In 2002 Prof Tilley relocated to the University of Adelaide/Hanson Institute to take up the position of the Dame Roma Mitchell Chair in Cancer Research. Since that time, he has convened the Hanson Symposium at the ASMR National Scientific Conference in 2003, and was an organiser of the ASMR Conference for 2005, which is focused on Hormones, Fertility and Cancer. In 2003, he initiated and ran the Inaugural PacRim (Pacific Rim) Breast and Prostate Cancer Meeting, which attracted eminent scientists in the field from around the world to South Australia. The success of this meeting led to a Second PacRim Meeting being held in Palm Springs in April 2005 with a Third PacRim Meeting being organised by Prof Tilley at Fraser Island in November 2006.
