Minlaton Medical Centre, Yorke Peninsula SA

History

After the closure of Minlaton Hospital in 1992 because of regionalisation, the provision of health services to the local community experienced difficulties. In August 1995 the University of Adelaide's Department of General Practice intervened, developing the Minlaton Medical Centre (MMC) as an academic teaching practice. The South Australian Department of Human Services supported the MMC with a contract to provide 24 hour emergency services previously provided by the Minlaton Hospital. Medical staff have been recruited to provide clinical service and additionally they have been appointed as fractional academic staff of the Department of General Practice. This enables them to devote significant time to teaching medical students and has since become a model duplicated throughout the Adelaide University Rural Clinical School.

Redevelopment

Commonwealth Government grant obtained by the university allowed infrastructure redevelopment in 2001. Building of a new waiting room, reception and office space allowed a functional join to be created between the existing consulting rooms and the emergency and community health facilities in the old hospital. Additional fit out created a dedicated undergraduate teaching space with computer, electronic whiteboard and videoconference facilities

Clinicians

Currently three GPs work full time in MMC; Dr Lorenzo Ponte, Dr Zak Baig and Dr James Ogundipe have general medical experience and are clinical title holders with the University of Adelaide. The GP’s devote considerable time and energy to teaching and learning within the Rural Clinical School medical curriculum. All GP’s deliver this teaching to medical students who participate in the following Spencer Gulf Rural Health School supported clinical placements;

  • The 6th year Specialist Community Ambulatory Placement (SCAP) program,
  • 2nd year rural week program where students spend one week immersed in rural practice and rural lifestyle issues and clinical practice.

The GP’s at MMC also mentor RAMUS students together with supervising John Flynn Scholarship recipients.
