Primary Health Care, Research Evaluation and Development Program (PHCRED)

Updated April 2009

In 2000, the Australian Commonwealth Government introduced the Primary Health Care Research Evaluation and Development (PHCRED) program. This provided funding for University Discipline of General Practice and Rural Health throughout Australia to develop the capacity of the primary health care sector to conduct research and implement research findings in clinical practice.

PHCRED Research Seeding Grants and Bursaries 2009

Discipline of General Practice
The University of Adelaide

Closing date: 06/04/09

The Primary Health Care Research Evaluation and Development Program (PHCRED) is offering a number of research seeding grants and bursaries for primary health care researchers and professionals wishing to undertake a research project with the support of the Discipline of General Practice (DGP). Grants are primarily for researchers within South Australia, and/or with a connection to the DGP at The University of Adelaide.

The program will provide funding and supervision to undertake primary health care related research that is both aligned with the Discipline’s research themes and reflects priority research areas that have been nominated by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing. The Discipline of General Practice’s research interests include cardiovascular, respiratory, and mental health, medical workforce, nutritional health, and complementary/ integrative medicine.

The following grants and scholarships are offered in 2009:

  1. Three PHCRED seeding grants (up to $8,000 each) for mid-level researchers in areas aligned with the Discipline’s research interests including cardiovascular, respiratory, and mental health, medical workforce, nutritional health, and complementary/ integrative medicine. Each project must involve external health care organisations or individuals and aim to develop research capacity and experience. The funding provides a good opportunity to undertake pilot work which might be useful to support future external grant applications.

  2. The application should contain a project outline (maximum 5 pages) including background, aims and objectives, study design, timeline and budget, as well as details of external organisations and/or individuals to be involved.

  3. Two PHCRED bursaries (up to $2,000 each) for primary health care researchers and professionals including GPs, nurses and allied health professionals for projects in areas aligned with the Discipline’s research interests including cardiovascular, respiratory, and mental health, medical workforce, nutritional health, and complementary/ integrative medicine.

The application should contain a project outline including background, aims and objectives, study design, timeline and budget, as well as details of investigators to be involved.

Applications will be reviewed by a panel of academics within the Discipline and ranked on a 7-point scale according to categories such as research idea, methods, capacity building, alignment with Discipline’s research areas etc.

Please submit applications by 6th of April 09 to PHCRED Program Manager Karin Ried or email to karin.ried@adelaide.edu.au.

The PHCRED program has become a core activity of The Discipline of General Practice (DGP) at University of Adelaide, with a variety of activities being undertaken. The PHCRED program offers research opportunties through the:

In addition, the PHCRED program provides
  • Capacity building workshops in research methodology (Calendar)
  • Writing group within the School of Population Health and Clinical Practice (monthly meetings)

The research capacity within the DGP had been enhanced through the employment of a Director, a Co-ordinator, a statistician and an administration assistant. Links with a variety of general practice and primary health care organisations have also been established. Research Training has been a priority for the Department and we have both sponsored a variety of participants at courses held by other institutions and undertaken a series of Workshops ourselves. This has provided the opportunity for both developing skills and relationships with the organisations of the participants. We also support the Tri-State PHCRED Collaboration SA, NT and VIC including the PHCRED programs at Flinders University (in SA, VIC and NT), Spencer Gulf Rural Health School,  and University of Adelaide.
