They will begin with an introduction to components of your general practice placement. You will also take part in small group learning activities which will improve your understanding of the management of patients with chronic diseases that are commonly seen in general practice
As part of your preparation for your GP placement, you will take part in a short series of tutorials which will help you to start thinking in a GP way. It will be assumed that you have completed the on-line tutorial from Medicare about the MBS billing system.

Select the tutorial Medicare and You - for new health professionals.
On the Monday afternoon from 3 - 5 we will work through some prescribing scenarios and do some prescribing. Be prepared to be challenged in a good-natured manner!
On the Tuesday morning from 10 – 12.30 we will work through some common GP scenarios, including some emergencies that can occur in a general practice setting.
After Tuesday’s tutorial you will be divided into groups and asked to prepare a short group presentation relating to the management of a chronic disease. There will be a selection of topics available, allowing some element of choice as to the area to be worked on. In addition to being helpful for both GP and hospital placements, the issues to be covered have also been chosen because they relate to areas that have tended to feature prominently in the fifth year examinations, and so they should be valuable to you at a number of levels.
You will have until Thursday morning to complete your presentation. Some notes about how to prepare an effective PowerPoint presentation can be found below (Preparing your presentation)
The Thursday tutorial (9 – 11.30) will include a group presentations about the 2 topics provided on the Tuesday morning. Each group presentation should be timed to last for a total of 25 - 30 minutes, including opportunity for questions and discussion by the whole tutorial group. You are encouraged to be as creative and engaging as possible in your presentation, and will have access to a laptop with data projector. Your grade for the GP component of GGP is derived from your GP preceptor’s assessment of your placement performance AND your tutorial performance. The major component of your tutorial performance will be the Thursday presentation.
You are free to use whatever resources you think are most appropriate in order to prepare your presentation. Suggested sources include the National Prescribing Service www.nps.org.au , Australian Family Physician www.racgp.org.au/afp , and the UK’s National Institute for Clinical Excellence www.nice.org.uk . Professional and consumer advocacy and resourcing groups often have good material – e.g. Diabetes Australia, The Heart Foundation and so on. Google them and see what their web sites have to offer. If there are problems in accessing relevant material, feel free to email me via simon.vanlint@adelaide.edu.au and I may be able to point you in the right direction. These presentations will be as interesting and useful as you make them…..
