Extended Courses

Endodontics - Course 0902

Presented by:
Dr Jack Linn
Dr Ian Trantor
Dr Erica Vinczer

This course sets out to combine a review of basic practices of hand instrumentation (including ”crown down”), experiences in new technologies (including DDI, Rotary NiTi and apex locators hands-on) and essential tips on how to avoid the pitfalls of endodontics. The morning sessions will be seminars and discussions and most afternoons will be in the lab working on models and extracted teeth aided by digital radiology. This will enhance your endodontic decision-making skills and improve your technical ability. The course is punctuated by case studies, which when combined with the seminars and practical work, will make a real difference to the way you practice endodontics.

Topics will include:

  • Modern endodontics: Concepts and rationale
  • Diagnosis and treatment planning
  • Endodontic instruments and material
  • Review of hand instrumentation including crown down
  • Rotary NiTi instrumentation systems and technique
  • “Apex location” technique
  • Obturation review: Lateral condensation
  • Warm vertical condensation
  • Success and failure: How successful is endodontics?
  • Strategies to avoid complications
  • Microscopic endodontics
  • Re-treatment of single canals

Oral Rehabilitation of the Worn Dentition (Course 0903)

Presented by:
Dr Manuv Suri
Dr John Kaidonis

Tooth wear is an increasingly significant problem for patients of all ages. Successful management requires a clear understanding of both diagnosis and a systematic approach to planning intervention.

The aim of this three day course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to manage patients with a worn dentition. It has been designed with a strong practical component which will be supported by theory presented in lectures and seminar group discussion of specific patient presentations.

The theoretical component will cover aetiology, diagnosis and clinical management strategies (both preventive and operative). In addition, there will be an overview of the restorative materials at our disposable for treatment. Practical exercises will take participants from the tooth preparation stage through to laboratory fabrication and cementation for a range of restorative materials including composite resins (direct/indirect), bonded and high-strength ceramics.

Gowns and protective wear are provided but please bring your glasses and loupes.

Dates    15—17 July
Venue    Adelaide Dental Hospital, Frome Road
Cost    $3300.00 (GST inclusive)
Course limit    10 participant

Dento-Alveolar Surgery (Course 0904)

Presented by:
Professor Alastair Goss

This popular course will consist of a core course with individual activities tailored to each practitioner's preferences where possible. It includes lectures, seminars and hands-on activities. The course is suited to general dentists at all skill levels and is for those who have done little exodontia or minor oral surgery, as well as those who are experienced in these fields and wish to extend their knowledge and skills.

The appropriate management of medically compromised patients is stressed, as are infection control procedures. Participants will attend the exodontia clinic, Day Stay Unit (mostly third molars) and elective surgery/outpatient clinic. Typically the range of procedures covers straightforward exodontia in medically compromised patients and the management of difficult extractions.

Procedures covered are dependent on the patients presenting, with the safety and well being of the patient paramount at all times. Patients are screened prior to the course and phoned again prior to the appointment, however we do not have full control of their attendances or treatment required.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Consolidate exodontia and dento-alveolar surgical skills
  • Improve management of medically compromised patients
  • Improve their management of more difficult patients
  • Undertake more difficult cases competently and confidently, saving time and stress for both patient and operator

Temporary Dental Board registration for interstate participants will be arranged and evidence of professional indemnity is required. Gowns and protective wear are provided but please bring your glasses and loupes.

Dates    29 June—2 July
Venue    Adelaide Dental Hospital, Frome Road
Cost    $3300.00 (GST inclusive)
Course limit    6 participant

Periodontics (Course 0905)

Presented by:
Dr Bryon Kardachi
Dr Steve Soukoulis

This course seeks to broaden the scope of the periodontic management of patients in your practice and increase your skills.

It aims to give you a better knowledge of disease you may not have previously recognised and will give you an understanding of management options for that disease in order to undertake procedures that previously you had left alone or referred. The course will cover aspects of periodontal surgery as well as a revision of scaling techniques.

The course comprises seminars and discussion sessions as well as demonstration of surgical techniques. Participants will view the use of sutures, medicaments and other adjuncts to periodontal surgery whenever the treatment requires it.

The procedures demonstrated are dependent on the treatment requirements of attending patients who have been examined and undergone treatment planning prior to the course.

Topics include:

  • Aesthetic surgery
  • Periodontal flap surgery
  • Guided bone regeneration
  • Surgery associated with implants
