Dr Miranda Van Hooff
Director of Research
PhD BA Hons (Psych)

Dr Van Hooff is a Senior Research Fellow, and Director of Research at The University of Adelaide's Centre for Traumatic Stress Studies.

She was lead researcher, investigator and author on the 2010 ADF Mental Health and Wellbeing Study (MHPWS), the first published study to examine the prevalence of Mental Health Disorder in the entire Australian Defence Force. Funded by the Department of Defence, in collaboration with the Directorate of Strategic and Operational Mental Health, this large-scale study established the prevalence of ICD-10 psychiatric disorder in a representative sample of 24,481 currently serving ADF personnel, as well as providing important information relating to the diagnostic efficiency of key screening instruments currently used by the ADF in the post-deployment environment. Currently, Dr Van Hooff is the Chief Investigator for SA Metropolitan Fire Service Health and Wellbeing Study, a mental health prevalence study of the entire professional fire fighting contingent, as well as the Transition and Wellbeing Research Programme, Australia’s most comprehensive research program to examine the impact of contemporary military service on the physical, social and mental health and wellbeing of serving and ex-serving ADF personnel.

Dr Van Hooff was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Medicine at The University of Adelaide in 2011 for her research into the longitudinal outcomes of childhood disaster exposure. During her academic career she has been an author, lead researcher and program manager on a number of high profile, large-scale longitudinal studies of traumatized populations, including childhood survivors of the 1983 Ash Wednesday Bushfires, burn injured children admitted to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, adults exposed to the 2006 Black Tuesday Bushfires and injury survivors admitted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. She has also completed a long-term study examining the neurocognitive outcomes of childhood lead exposure.
